Why Hire A Professional? – It’s a Function of Delegation

Mechanics, contractors, accountants, financial advisors; all people we hire to do the things that we lack the time, knowledge, or desire to do.

One commonly asked question is, “why should I hire a professional?” For some people there is no need to hire a professional. If I were good enough to do my own taxes, well then, I would do my own taxes. However, I am not so I hired a CPA. For many of us, we lack one, two or all three of the qualifications needed to complete a task, and thus we hire or delegate to someone else.

There are three important questions to consider when deciding whether to hire a professional:

  1. Do I have the TIME to….?
  2. Do I have the KNOWLEDGE to….?
  3. Do I have the DESIRE to….?

You can fill in the blanks, as it really does not matter on the topic. If you answer “yes” to all three then as we say in the business you are a “do-it-yourselfer” and congratulations to you; you are in the minority. The reality is that most of us lack one of these three qualities, (or all of them!).

Making the decision to delegate to someone else is often a very difficult thing to do, however it can also be the best decision you may ever make. Remember that your time is a very valuable commodity and freeing up more of it to do stuff you really want or need to do may be worth the “expense” or as I like to say “investment”.

When people first set out to hire a Financial Advisor they are often motivated by a certain event, for example, job loss or a stock market crash. Yet as they further explore the true reasons it becomes clear it is a function of delegating. Today, we are simply overwhelmed by choices and we often feel like we are “missing out” on something. Delegating the Time, Knowledge, or Desire to a professional may turn out to be the best “investment” you ever make!
